Deep Pocket vs. Shallow Pocket: Who Actually Has the Advantage

A deep pocket and a shallow pocket each have their own advantages, and the better option depends on how you play. A deeper pocket generally provides more hold and ball security, making it useful for players who carry the ball through contact, dodge aggressively, or want extra control while cradling. It can also give you more confidence when protecting your stick during a slide or double team. The tradeoff is that a deeper pocket can sometimes create more whip or a slower release if it isn't strung and adjusted properly.

A shallow pocket, on the other hand, can provide a quicker, cleaner release and make it easier to move the ball quickly. Players who rely on fast passing, quick-stick finishes, or a rapid shooting motion may prefer a shallower setup. But less depth can mean less hold, especially when you're getting checked or carrying the ball at full speed. So who has the advantage? Neither. The best pocket is the one that matches your position, mechanics, and playing style. Don't choose a pocket because it's popular—choose the one that lets you play your best.
